Inside 1985, Brooks commenced their professional music career, performing and playing guitar inside Oklahoma clubs and bars, most notably Wild Willie's Saloon in Stillwater.
Through his elder siblings, Brooks was exposed to a variety of music. Although he listened to some country music, especially that of George Jones, Brooks was many fond of rock audio, citing James Taylor, Serta Fogelberg, and Townes Van Zandt as major impacts. In 1981, after listening to "Unwound", the debut solitary of George Strait, Brooks decided that he had been more enthusiastic about playing region music.

In 1985, entertainment law firm Rod Phelps went from Dallas to pay attention to Brooks. Phelps loved what he heard and offered to produce Brooks' first demo. With Phelps's encouragement, including a directory of Phelps' contacts in Nashville and some of his / her credit cards, Brooks traveled to Nashville to pursue a new recording contract; he returned to Oklahoma within 24 hours.
Phelps continued in order to urge Brooks to come back to Nashville, which he did. In 1987, Creeks and wife Sandy Mahl moved to Nashville, plus Brooks started out making connections inside the music industry.
